On December 18, 2017, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a major change in who can qualify for a TN visa under the NAFTA profession of Economist. Under the policy update, USCIS has clarified which NAFTA professionals can qualify for TN status as an Economist.
To qualify under NAFTA as an Economist, qualified professionals must engage in activities closely aligned with the profession of an economist. Other occupations related to the field of economics that have qualified under NAFTA in the past will no longer be eligible for TN status as an Economist. Examples include professionals working as financial analysts, marketing analysts, and market research analysts.
This policy went into effect on December 18, 2017 and applies to current TN visa status holders, applications for TN visa renewals, applications for TN visa extensions, and applications for change of employer.
