After you have entered the United States under TN-1 status your employer/HR department is likely to request a copy of your social security card for payroll/tax purposes. The process of obtaining a social security card is relatively simple as long as you have original or certified copies of all the required documents. A social security card issued to a foreign national is valid only with work authorization and such is indicated on the card. Once a social security card is issued it remains valid and can be used indefinitely with valid work authorization. There is no need to obtain a new social security card if you change employers or if you haven’t used the social security card recently.
