The Director of U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a new mission statement for the agency. The change was done to more closely align the mission of USCIS with upholding the rule of law and ensuring the integrity of the immigration system. The new USCIS Mission Statement reads:
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values.
This is a noticeable change from the previous USCIS mission statement that read:
USCIS secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.
The new USCIS Mission Statement has taken the agency mission away from serving and providing potential benefits to immigrants, to, enforcing and upholding the law while safeguarding the United States. This change is consistent with the current administration’s, “America First” and, “Buy American, Hire American” priority.
With this change we expect USCIS to place more scrutiny on applications for immigration benefits while applying less discretion in favor of applicants. This change underscores the importance of using qualified representation in all U.S. Immigration Law matters.
