TN Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist

Sylviculturists and Forestry Specialists manage private and private forested lands for purposes of recreation, economic, and conservation. They look after the trees and aim to control forest regeneration, growth, quality and composition. Sylviculturists are especially trained to identify pests and diseases of trees to keep them healthy and growing. They can be employed by government, environmental organizations or logging companies. With adequate understanding and skills of the role of light, crowding and methods of harvesting and replanting, they are trusted for regenerating forests.

Sylviculturist and Forestry Specialist may care for the trees through diagnosing diseases, careful pruning, treating trees invaded by pests and fertilizing trees. They also play a big role in removal and planting of trees, and conduct public talks about tree health. They research for lumber companies, various government agencies that deal with trees and forestry, environmental protection association and even suggest possible areas where trees need to be cut for sale.  Some potential job titles of Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist are Area Forester, Forester, Chief Unit Forester, Fire Prevention Forester, Regional Forester, Environmental Protection Forester, Resource Forester, Urban Forester and Service Forester.

To qualify for TN Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist non-immigrant status, the applicant for Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist profession must have earned, and is able to provide proof of the following educational requirements:

  1. Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree

The applicant for TN Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist profession must also provide the additional requirements:

  1. Proof of Canadian citizenship;
  2. A detailed letter from prospective employer;
  3. Proof of intent to return to his/her permanent residence in Canada at the expiration of the temporary TN stay

If the applicant is able to provide evidence of the requirements enumerated above, he/she may qualify for TN Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist professional status.

A qualified Sylviculturist/Forestry Specialist can obtain TN Professional status for a maximum of three years. Any extension of the status may be issued for up to one year provided that the individual continues to comply with the requirements for TN professionals. The number of extensions has no limit. However, the professional must continue to demonstrate that his/her employment is temporary in nature, and that his/her NAFTA entry is not used to bypass normal procedures of immigration.
