TN Visa Medical Laboratory Technologist

A Medical Laboratory Technologist performs complex laboratory tests for the diagnosis, medication and prevention of diseases. He/she investigates the structure, growth, development and such other characteristics of fungi, algae, bacteria and other microscopic microorganisms, and may train or supervise staff in a medical laboratory setting.   The job of the Medical Laboratory Technologist falls under the broad career category of Microbiology, which is the study of the relationship between diseases and microorganisms and how antibiotics affect them.

As an allied health professional, a Medical Laboratory Technologist performs both technical and scientific functions in medical laboratories.  Some other potential job titles of Medical Laboratory Technologist are Clinical Laboratory Manager, Medical Technologist (MT), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Laboratory Technician, Microbiologist, Medical Laboratory Technologist (Medical Lab Tech), Research Assistant, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Medical Technician and Cytology Laboratory Manager.

To qualify for a TN Visa as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, the applicant must have earned, and is able to provide proof of the following educational requirements:

  1. Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree; or
  2. Post-secondary Diploma; OR
  3. Postsecondary Certificate; AND
  4. Three years of related experience

The applicant for TN Visa Medical Laboratory Technologist profession must also provide the additional requirements:

  1. Proof of Canadian citizenship;
  2. A detailed support letter from prospective employer;
  3. Proof of intent to return to his/her permanent residence in Canada at the expiration of the temporary TN visa stay

If the applicant is able to provide evidence of the requirements enumerated above, he/she may qualify for TN Visa Medical Laboratory Technologist professional status.

A qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist can obtain TN Visa Professional status for a maximum of three years. Any extension of the status may be issued for up to three years provided that the individual continues to comply with the requirements for TN Visa professionals. The number of extensions has no limit. However, the professional must continue to demonstrate that his/her employment is temporary in nature, and that his/her NAFTA entry is not used to bypass normal procedures of immigration.
