Pharmacologists study drug action and the interactions occurring between living organisms and chemicals which affect normal or abnormal biochemical function. They study substances, and consider them pharmaceuticals if the substances possess medicinal properties. Pharmacologists focus on drug properties and composition, toxicology, therapy, interactions, anti-pathogenic capabilities and medical applications. Some Pharmacologists specialize in pharmacodynamics which involves the interactions of chemicals with bio-receptors, and some focus on pharmacokinetics which involves absorption, metabolism, distribution and excretion of chemicals from biological systems. However, these two main areas of pharmacology are interrelated.
Pharmacologists generally deal with the interaction of drugs within biological systems or the reactions of drugs and the body on each other, the nature of drugs, their properties and sources. Some other potential job titles of Pharmacologist are Laboratory Director, Scientist, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Investigator, Research Associate, Clinical Pharmacologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Research Director, Medical Affairs Director, and Clinical Research Scientist.
