A Recreational Therapist provides treatment service and designs recreational activities for ill or disabled persons with the use of various movement techniques such as games, sports, arts and crafts, dance, music, drama, and community outings. The primary goal of a Recreational Therapist is to improve or maintain physical, emotional and mental well-being of clients. Therapists also help people reduce their stress, anxiety and depression, recover basic reasoning abilities and basic motor functions, and eliminate the effects of people’s disability or illness so they can socialize effectively.
A Recreational Therapist organizes leisure activities not just for enjoyment but for therapeutic purposes as well. Examples of these recreational activities are teaching right-handed individuals suffering from right-side paralysis to throw swing a racket using the left arm, and persuading a loner client to play games with others. Some other potential job titles of Recreational Therapist are Activity Director , Recreation Therapist, Rehabilitation Therapist , Recreational Therapist, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Activity Assistant, Activities Director, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), Music Therapist (Rehabilitation) and Activity Coordinator.
To qualify for a TN Visa as a Recreational Therapist, the applicant must have earned, and is able to provide proof of the following educational requirements:
- Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree
The applicant for a TN Visa as a Recreational Therapist profession must also provide the additional requirements:
- Proof of Canadian citizenship;
- A detailed support letter from prospective employer;
- Proof of intent to return to his/her permanent residence in Canada at the expiration of the temporary TN Visa stay
If the applicant is able to provide evidence of the requirements enumerated above, he/she may qualify for TN Visa Recreational Therapist professional status.
A qualified Recreational Therapist can obtain TN Visa Professional status for a maximum of three years. Any extension of the status may be issued for up to three years provided that the individual continues to comply with the requirements for TN Visa professionals. The number of extensions has no limit. However, the professional must continue to demonstrate that his/her employment is temporary in nature, and that his/her NAFTA entry is not used to bypass normal procedures of immigration.
